GB Rowing Team: 1 day 3 hours ago

The U23 men's coxed four of Sybren Hoogland, Timothy Grant, William Warr, Callum McBrierty and cox Harry Brightmore got the GB Rowing Team off to a flying start at the World U23 Championships in Varese this afternoon by winning their heat in a time of 6:30.88 to qualify directly for Saturday's finals.

This was a very tight race in which the lead changed hands several times before the British quartet shrugged off Italy in the final few strokes of the race. France were third and Russia fourth.

On a day when racing starts at the World U23 Championships, two further squads of Great Britain’s best junior rowers have been announced for the World Rowing Junior Championships in Hamburg, Germany, and the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Libourne, France.

A squad of 30 rowers in seven boats will compete at the World Juniors in Hamburg from 6-10 August. At the equivalent 2013 event, GB made history when Jess Leyden, who has this week graduated to race in the same event at World U23 level, won the women's single scull for the first time in the nation's history.

This year's Berkshire School Games hosted just under 100 young people, with young rowers from Years 7 up to Year 10 racing in both individual and team relay events.

The event was held at Winchester College and run by The Windsor Partnership, with support from British Rowing

The Year 7 boys' event proved a tight battle – James Mclaugain (the Downs School) taking a great win by over 25 meters, but with the battle for second and third place split between five competitors, all of whom finished within 8m of each other.

Olympian Sarah Winckless is to step down as Chair of the BOA Athlete’s Commission, when her current term of office comes to an end in December.

Sarah, an Olympic bronze medallist and double World Champion sculler, has Chaired the Athlete’s Commission since its formation in 2010 – representing the views and interests of former, current and future athletes to the BOA.
